TESTIMONIALS / INSIGHT
Indian Hill is fortunate to have a community that values education and offers its schools the resources they need: financial support, physical assets, parental involvement, and community support. In turn the schools have been able to attract great teachers and have enjoyed the National Award of Excellence.
Is that enough? Elizabeth Johnston believes there’s still a lot more to accomplish, and she’s ready to work for every child in the Indian Hill School District. She says, “We must educate the intellect and develop the character.”
- Every child deserves the opportunity to maximize his or her potential.
- Every child deserves an atmosphere of open inquiry and superior educational opportunity.
- Every child deserves to feel valued.
- Every child deserves an environment of trust, respect and compassion.
Elizabeth believes in whole child education, an approach she would like to see the district adopt. There are three essential components to proper child development: educate the intellect, nurture the emotional well-being and nourish the physical wellness of every child. It is not possible to address only one of these fundamentals and expect the child to reach his/her potential.
Indian Hill Schools are typical of a national trend that has showered resources on the top 10% of students with the aim of “not holding them back” from their academic potential. Shouldn’t that philosophy extend to the other 90 % of students? As a community, do we not value the potential of all our students?
Elizabeth sees our schools through the eyes of a parent, a school volunteer, and a taxpayer. She has lived in Indian Hill with her family since 1988. She and Doug, her husband 31 years, have four children ranging in age from 25 to 12. All four have attended or are still attending Indian Hill Schools.
Elizabeth has been a business owner and has an academic background focusing on policy and administration through a Master’s Degree in Science.
